Royal Darwin Hospital
Short-Term Accommodation Facility

In 2011 Tom Gray was engaged to provide art within a new Northern Territory health accommodation facility. The brief called for public art to encourage a  “welcoming and inclusive” environment. This was an opportunity to integrate art within the architecture of a new construction.

In this project Tom engaged and collaborated with Larrakia Nation artists to design and produce a broad spectrum of exciting work. Through respectful consultation with the Larrakia traditional custodians, the resulting work responds to the local geography and biodiversity, a significant cultural and coastal landscape looking out across the Arafura Sea.

Artists provided work for wall patterns, floors, punched metal screens and playground facilities. The key artwork was a collaborative drawing with which the four artists worked directly with builders to make images in coloured concrete throughout the facilities outdoor areas.
